Whether you're a trade professional advising customers or a DIY enthusiast looking to transform your outdoor space, timber staining is essential for maintaining beautiful, protected exterior woodwork.

From weathered decking to faded fencing, the right staining approach can restore your timber's natural beauty while providing crucial protection against the elements.
Here, we’ll cover everything you need to know about outdoor wood staining, from preparation through to application. At Barrettine, we’re here to help you achieve professional results that will stand the test of time.
Why outdoor timber needs more than just colour
When it comes to exterior wood, staining isn't just about achieving an attractive finish – it's about providing essential protection. Outdoor timber faces constant challenges from moisture, UV radiation, temperature fluctuations, and fungal attack. Without proper protection, even the most beautiful hardwood will eventually succumb to rot, splitting, and the natural greying process.
Quality exterior stain products combine pigments or wood dyes for colour with preservatives and/or water-repellent resins. This dual approach means your timber not only looks great but also receives crucial protection against decay, insect attack, and weather damage. The general rule is that protection should always come along with aesthetics when selecting your staining products.
Unlike interior wood stain products, formulations for exterior use must be far more durable to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. This is why choosing the right product for your specific application is so important.

Choosing the right staining approach
The best way to stain outdoor timber, and the best products for the job, depends on several key factors.
The age/condition of your exterior timber
First, consider whether you're working with new timber or existing woodwork that may already have been treated. The age and condition of the wood will significantly impact your product choice and application method.
The type of structure
The type of wooden structure also matters. Decking requires different treatment than fencing or cladding – deck stain needs superior wear resistance due to foot traffic, while fence treatments prioritise weather protection and easy application with a brush or roller.
The colour you’re after
Consider the natural colour of the wood and your desired finish. Some customers prefer to maintain the wood's natural look, while others want to dramatically change the wood colour. Some look for wood stains that replicate the colour of wood species, like walnut, mahogany or teak.
Hardwood or softwood
For hardwood species like oak or birch, you may need different application techniques compared to softwood timber. Dense hardwoods can be more challenging to penetrate, potentially requiring a primer before staining, or additional coats of product compared to softwoods.
Essential preparation: cleaning before staining
Before any staining work begins, proper preparation is crucial for achieving a professional finish. Start by using a quality mould and mildew cleaner like our Knockout Mould & Mildew Cleaner. This ready-to-use fungicidal wash contains biocides that eliminate mould, mildew, algae, and fungi from timber surfaces, removing both visible growth and hidden spores that could affect your stain's adhesion and longevity.

Apply the cleaner by brush, roller, or spray, allowing it to work on the surface of the wood before rinsing thoroughly. This step is particularly important for timber that's been exposed to damp conditions or shows signs of surface contamination.
For timber that's suffered from UV damage or weathering, Barrettine Wood Reviver is an excellent preparatory treatment. This water-based formulation contains oxalic acid – a biodegradable organic acid found naturally in plants. It effectively restores grey, UV-damaged wood to its original warm tones while removing stains from tannin runs, watermarks, iron, rust, and light dirt.
To use Wood Reviver, first wet the timber surface, then apply the product generously. Leave it to work for up to 30 minutes, agitate with a non-metal brush, then rinse thoroughly. This process can dramatically improve the final appearance of your staining project.
Staining untreated timber: complete protection with Wood Preserver
For outdoor timber that hasn't been previously treated with preservatives, Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver offers comprehensive protection combined with attractive colour options.
This high-quality, low-odour, oil-based wood preserver provides deep penetration and protects against wood-destroying fungi, wood-discolouring fungi, and wood-boring insects.
The product provides high-level, long-lasting protection. It's suitable for rough, sawn, or smooth timber and doesn't require a top coat for protection.
Available in eight colours – Clear, Dark Brown, Light Brown, Golden Brown, Red Cedar, Holly Green, Summer Tan, and Black – this range covers most customer preferences while maintaining the natural wood texture through its semi-transparent matt/satin finish.
Application:
- Ensure the timber is dry and free from dirt or other coatings
- Always carry out a patch test before application to ensure the desired finish.
- Make sure weather conditions are dry and still
- Apply by brush, roller, or dip method
- Under normal conditions (20°C/65% relative humidity), drying time is around 12 hours
- For best results, apply 2-3 coats, allowing proper drying time between applications.

Treating pre-preserved timber: Wood Protective Treatment
When working with timber that's already been pressure-treated or preserved against fungi and wood-boring insects, Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment provides ideal additional protection from weather.
This wood sealer contains water-repellent resins that help reduce decay, swelling, and twisting while offering UV fade-resistant pigments.
Perfect for treated timber structures such as sheds, fences, trellis, pergolas, and timber gazebos, this oil/spirit-based formulation penetrates deeply while leaving a transparent/translucent finish that allows the grain texture to remain visible.
The product range includes a variety of colour options - Clear, Dark Brown, Light Brown, Golden Brown, Red Cedar, Holly Green, Summer Tan, and Black. It also contains a film biocide to prevent surface growth of mould and algae, adding an extra layer of protection.
Application:
- Ensure the timber is dry and free from dirt
- Always carry out a patch test before application to ensure the desired finish.
- Make sure weather conditions are dry and still
- Apply by brush, roller, or dip method

Specialist decking protection: All-In-One Treatment
Decking requires specialist treatment due to the additional stresses it faces from foot traffic, weather exposure, and regular cleaning.
Barrettine Decking Oil All-In-One Treatment is specifically formulated for pressure-treated and preservative-impregnated timber, offering superior protection for deck boards, deck tiles, and balustrades.
This innovative product oils, protects, and stains in one application, featuring built-in UV protection and a translucent wood finish that keeps the wood grain pattern visible. The non-flaking formula and excellent water repellency help prevent timber splitting and cracking – common problems with decking.
Available in a range of colours plus Clear – Amber, Natural, Rosewood, Dark, Red Cedar, and Clear – the range offers options to complement any stylistic preferences. The low-odour formulation includes a dry film preserver that helps prevent future mould and fungi growth.
Application:
- Ensure wood to be treated is dry, free from dirt and other coatings (remove and sand down as required).
- Always carry out a patch test before application to ensure the desired finish.
- Make sure weather conditions are dry and still
- Apply with a brush or spray
- For best results, apply second coat after 48 hours

What’s the difference between the Wood Preserver and Wood Protective Treatment?
The main difference is that Wood Preserver is for untreated timber and provides complete protection against rot, decay, and insects. Wood Protective Treatment is designed for timber that's already been pre-treated to protect against rot, decay and insects, and offers additional protection against the weather and UV radiation.
Put simply, we’d recommend using Wood Preserver on bare, untreated wood and Wood Protective Treatment on timber that's already been preserved. If you need a hand finding the right product for your needs, please feel free to get in touch with our team of experts.
