Garden fencing serves as more than just a boundary marker – it provides privacy, security, and structure to your outdoor space. However, without proper treatment, even the most robust fence panels can quickly deteriorate.
Understanding the importance of treating a fence is essential for both trade professionals and DIY enthusiasts who want to protect their investment and maintain beautiful, structurally sound garden boundaries.
A well-maintained fence not only preserves the beauty of the wood but also extends the lifespan of your garden fencing significantly. Whether you're a trade professional working with a new fence or a DIY enthusiast restoring existing garden fence panels, the right treatment approach can transform weathered timber and provide long-lasting protection.
At Barrettine, we have all the products needed to revive existing fencing and protect exterior timber.
Understanding the threats to your garden fence
Exterior wood faces numerous challenges that can compromise both its appearance and structural integrity.
Weather damage represents the most significant threat to garden wood. Constant exposure to rain, snow, and fluctuating temperatures causes wood to expand and contract, leading to splits, warps, and eventual structural failure.
UV radiation from sunlight gradually breaks down lignin in the wood fibres, causing that characteristic grey, weathered appearance that signals deterioration.
Wood rot develops when moisture penetrates untreated timber, creating perfect conditions for fungal growth. Additionally, mould, mildew, and algae can discolour and weaken exterior wooden surfaces over time.
Finally, water damage is a persistent issue, particularly where fence posts meet the ground. Without adequate protection, moisture penetration leads to decay that spreads throughout the timber structure.
Expert exterior woodcare from Barrettine
At Barrettine, we have a range of professional woodcare treatments designed to protect, preserve and beautify exterior timber.

Step 1: Restoring weathered timber with Wood Reviver
Exterior wood care involves a number of factors. Before applying any protective treatments, weathered fence panels require restoration to achieve the very best finish. Barrettine Wood Reviver provides an effective solution for bringing grey, UV-damaged exterior wood back to its original warm tones.
This water-based formulation contains oxalic acid, a naturally occurring biodegradable compound that safely removes the grey oxidation layer from weathered timber.
To apply Wood Reviver, first wet the wooden fence panels with water, then apply the product generously using a brush or roller.
Working in manageable sections is a great way to prevent the wood from drying out. Allow 15-30 minutes for the product to work, then agitate the surface with a non-metal brush before rinsing thoroughly. This process effectively removes rust stains from fixings and restores the natural appearance of the wood, providing an ideal foundation for subsequent treatments.

Step 2: Eliminating biological growth with Mould & Mildew Cleaner
After reviving the wood, thorough cleaning is essential to remove any biological growth. Barrettine Mould & Mildew Cleaner contains biocides specifically designed to eliminate mould, mildew, and light dirt whilst also killing invisible mould spores within the wood structure.
Apply the cleaner using a brush or roller, ensuring complete coverage of all fence surfaces. Allow the product to work for a minimum of 15-30 minutes without letting it completely dry out.
Use a stiff brush to release stubborn dirt and debris, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. This cleaning process ensures that subsequent treatments can penetrate effectively and bond properly with the timber.
Step 3: Treating a fence with Barrettine Wood Preserver
For fence protection, Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver delivers comprehensive treatment in a single application. This high-quality, oil-based formulation provides deep penetrating protection against wood-destroying fungi, wood rot, and insect attack whilst offering a semi-transparent finish that preserves the natural wood texture.
This complete treatment solution makes it ideal for protecting bare wood or timber that has been exposed and requires additional protection.
The low-odour formula contains active biocides, shielding timber fencing against future fungal growth. Water-repellent resins create a physical barrier against moisture penetration, whilst UV fade-resistant pigments help maintain the wood’s appearance over time.
Available in a range of colours including Clear, Golden Brown, Dark Brown, and Red Cedar, this versatile wood preserver suits various aesthetic preferences whilst delivering professional-grade protection.
Apply using brush, roller to apply. The oil-based formulation penetrates deeply into both rough sawn and smooth wood surfaces, requiring no subsequent topcoat for effective protection.
Allow 12 hours drying time under normal conditions, with 2-3 coats recommended for optimal results.

Protecting pre-treated fencing: Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment
For new fence panels or timber that has already been treated with a preservative, Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment offers an excellent alternative to the Barrettine Wood Preserver that provides additional weatherproofing without the comprehensive biocidal protection of a full wood preserver.
This oil-based wood sealer is specifically designed for pre-treated timber, making it ideal for pressure-treated or tanalised fence panels that require extra defence against weather damage.
The formulation contains quality water-repellent resins that reduce decay, swelling, and twisting whilst offering excellent water beading properties. UV fade-resistant pigments help protect against sun damage, and a surface biocide prevents mould and algae growth on the treated surface.
Available in Clear and various other colour options, this deep-penetrating treatment maintains the natural wood grain visibility whilst providing long-lasting weather protection.
Apply using brush, roller, or spray application, allowing 12 hours drying time between the recommended 2-3 coats.

Should you use a pressure washer on fence panels?
Many consider pressure washing as a quick solution for cleaning garden fence panels, but this unfortunately can cause significant damage to the wood. High-pressure water penetrates deeply into the wood fibres, causing them to lift and separate. This damage creates an uneven surface that’s difficult to treat effectively.
Instead of pressure washing, use the gentler cleaning methods outlined above combined with appropriate cleaning products.
