Timber Cladding Treatment: How-To Guide

Timber cladding transforms exterior spaces, adding natural beauty and character to homes and commercial buildings across the UK. Whether you're working with western red cedar, douglas fir, or other premium timber species, proper timber cladding treatment is essential for maintaining both appearance and structural integrity.

As experts in woodcare, at Barrettine we are well-placed to provide expert advice on the best practices for protecting your cladding investment, from initial application through ongoing maintenance.
Protecting your valuable cladding investment
External timber cladding is a significant investment in your property's exterior. Without proper treatment, even premium wood species can deteriorate rapidly when exposed to UV radiation, moisture, humidity, and insect attack. Untreated wood also quickly loses its natural colour, turning an unsightly silver-grey as the surface degrades.
The cost of replacing failed cladding far exceeds the investment in quality treatment products. When installing new cladding, taking proactive steps to protect against weather damage, fungi, and wood-boring insects ensures your timber maintains its beauty and structural integrity for years to come.
Professional timber cladding treatment not only preserves the wood but can dramatically extend its lifespan, making it a wise investment for both trade professionals and homeowners.

Surface preparation for professional results
Proper surface preparation determines the success of any timber cladding treatment. Poor preparation leads to uneven protection and inadequate protection.
Preparation steps:
- Allow new timber to acclimatise in position for up to 6 weeks
- Remove resinous deposits with a scraper and methylated spirits
- Fill cracks and gaps with suitable wood filler
- Sand to a smooth finish using medium-grit sandpaper
- If necessary, clean thoroughly with Barrettine Mould & Mildew Cleaner
The type of wood influences preparation requirements. Dense species like oak require less product than porous woods such as cedar or pine. Always patch test a small area first, as protection products may initially darken the surface before fading to the natural colour as it cures.
Step 1: Protect with Clear Universal Wood Preserver
Before applying any coating to your exterior cladding, establishing a solid foundation of protection is crucial. Barrettine Clear Universal Wood Preserver Primer provides deep-penetrating protection against the primary threats to outdoor timber.
This colourless, low-odour formula penetrates deeply into the wood fibres, protecting against wood-destroying fungi (wet rot), wood-discolouring fungi, and insect attack. The wax-free formulation ensures excellent adhesion for subsequent topcoats while providing long-lasting wood preservation. The deep penetration ensures a high level of protection, establishing a robust defence against decay and insect damage.
Ensure the timber is dry with moisture content below 20%. Remove any dirt, paint, or varnish using appropriate sanders or paint & varnish removers. If no coating has previously been applied and the cladding is already weathered and grey, Barrettine’s Wood Reviver can be used and will bring the original colour tone back to the timber. Once the surface is prepared, clean with Barrettine Knockout Mould and Mildew to eliminate any mould spores which may be present on the surface, preventing them from germinating in future.
When dry, apply Barrettine Clear Universal Wood Preserver Primer using a brush, roller, or dipping method. For best results, apply 2-3 coats, but allow 12 hours drying time before applying topcoats.
Step 2: UV protection with Armourflex® Ultimate UV Protection Oil
UV radiation poses one of the greatest threats to timber cladding, causing colour loss and surface degradation. Armourflex® Ultimate UV Protection Oil provides premium protection against weathering whilst maintaining the wood's natural appearance.
This innovative formula combines natural oils, waxes, and resins with advanced UV stabilising technology. The transparent finish allows the wood's natural grain and colour to show through whilst providing superior water repellence and protection against fungi and algae growth.
This product protects against UV degradation that causes swelling and twisting, with a microporous finish that resists flaking and blistering. As well as helping to retain the wood’s original colour and tone, Armourflex® Ultimate UV Protection Oil also provides excellent water-shedding properties.
Apply 2-3 thin coats using a high-quality brush or roller. The first coat should saturate the wood, whilst subsequent coats should be applied sparingly. Allow minimum 4 hours between coats and 10 hours for full drying.
Coverage varies by wood density - expect 15-20 square metres per litre on smooth, planed timber. Dense woods like oak achieve higher coverage rates than softer species. As a guide, one litre covers approximately 8 square metres with two coats.

Ongoing maintenance for timber cladding
Regular maintenance extends the life of your timber cladding treatment and preserves its appearance. Establishing a maintenance routine prevents major restoration work and keeps your cladding looking professional.
- Wash with Barrettine Mould & Mildew Cleaner twice yearly
- Inspect cladding regularly for signs of weathering, particularly in exposed areas
- Re-coat annually or at first signs of degradation
When is the best time of year for treating exterior cladding?
Early spring and autumn provide ideal conditions for maintenance work. Focus attention on south-facing and exposed areas, which experience greater UV exposure and weather. Sheltered areas typically require less frequent attention. If weathering occurs, use Barrettine Wood Reviver to restore greyed timber before re-treatment.
Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, pressure washing, or steam cleaning, which can damage the protective coating and underlying timber. Regular gentle cleaning with appropriate products maintains both appearance and protection.
