The colour swatches are an indication only and representative of the product applied to clean new/pale timber and rough sawn pine (2 coats). The final colour finish can vary considerably due to the age, type & condition of the timber being treated and will darken with multiple coats. Viewing colours on multiple digital screens can vary considerably and may not be totally accurate. We always recommend carrying out a small inconspicuous test area first. It is the Customer/end users responsibility to satisfy themselves that the colour finish is correct before full application.
Smooth Pine (2 coats)
Rough Pine (2 coats)
If used on Wooden Garden furniture, make sure the coating has fully dried/cured and is colour fast before use. The results and timing can vary due to atmospheric weather conditions and wood type. Natural oily/resinous woods and tight grain hardwoods can take longer to dry and completely cure. To be sure there is no risk of colour transfer from the treated wood/furniture onto clothing, we recommend running a white lint-free cloth over the surface and inspect for any colour rub off. If colour transfer occurs, the treated article may need a longer drying time. Due to the nature of certain resinous woods, a sealer/topcoat may be required. We recommend carrying out a test area first.

What is the difference between Barrettine Wood Preserver, Wood Protective Treatment and Universal Preserver?
Barrettine Wood Preserver

Barrettine Universal Preserver
- Primer, requiring over-coating if weathering expected
- Can be used on structural timbers such as roof/floor joists without a topcoat
- Contains biocides that protect against wet rot, decay and wood boring insects
- Resins & binders present are intended to retain the biocides rather than repel water
- Available in clear only
- For use on bare wood which will be over-coated, for example with Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment or opaque paint, or physically protected from the elements.
- Compatible with many products both water- and solvent-based. Compatibility with any additional coating should always be confirmed by a test patch.
It should be noted that the above products are preventative treatments and these products are unlikely to kill/control mould spores already present within the wood. If this is suspected, Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner should be used, prior to coating the wood. The bottom of wooden structures e.g. sheds will also require more frequent treatment with Mould and Mildew Cleaner, as the action of rain splashing on the ground will distribute mould spores onto the wood. Frequent treatment with Mould and Mildew Cleaner can prolong the life of the wood coating. Also, repeat and periodic re-treatments using the above wood care products will enhance and protect the appearance, and prolong the life of the wood.
Additionally, whilst Barrettine Wood Preserver and Universal Preserver are protective against wood-boring insects, they will not kill existing infestations. For this, Barrettine Woodworm Killer would be required.
What is best to preserve wood?
To preserve wood effectively, it's essential to protect it from several threats, including moisture, fungal growth, insect attack, and UV damage. For comprehensive wood preservation, using high-quality products is crucial.
For outdoor wood preservation, Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver offers comprehensive protection. It safeguards against wood-destroying fungi, wood-discolouring fungi, and wood-boring insects while providing water repellence and UV resistance. This formula is suitable for treating untreated or pre-treated timber and doesn't require over-sealing for weather protection.
Additionally, Barrettine Clear Universal Wood Preserver serves as an effective primer as it is wax-free. It prevents wet rot and decay, protecting wood from fungi and insects but should be overcoated with a UV protection oil for weather resistance.
For UV protection, Armourflex Ultimate UV Protection Oil is recommended to shield high-end wood from sun damage to maintain its natural colour and structural integrity. This oil combines natural oils, waxes, and advanced UV stabilisers, also offering water repellence to prevent moisture ingress.
Using these products can help ensure your wood remains beautiful and resilient for years to come.
What is the difference between wood preserver and protector?
A wood preserver and a wood protector serve different functions in wood care.
A wood preserver, like Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver, is designed to protect wood from fungi, wood-boring insects, and decay by deeply penetrating the wood. It contains biocides and resins that offer long-lasting protection, making it ideal for use on bare or untreated wood to provide comprehensive defence.
On the other hand, a wood protector, such as Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment, is primarily used as a wood sealer to protect wood from environmental elements like moisture and UV damage. It is often applied to pre-treated or decorative surfaces to enhance water resistance and reduce fading, but it does not contain biocides for insect or fungal protection.
What is the best type of preservative for wood?
The best type of preservative for wood depends on the specific needs and exposure of the timber. Generally, oil-based preservatives are recommended for deeper penetration and longer-lasting protection compared to water-based options. For a highly effective solution, consider Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver, which offers comprehensive protection against wood-destroying fungi, discolouring fungi, and wood-boring insects, and is ideal for outdoor use.
For those seeking dual protection against moisture and UV rays, Armourflex® Ultimate UV Protection Oil combined with a wood preserver like Barrettine Clear Universal Preserver provides a robust shield to maintain the wood's strength and appearance.
What is the difference between wood sealer and wood preservative?
A wood sealer is primarily designed to protect wood surfaces from moisture, UV rays, and dirt by creating a water-repellent barrier. It typically enhances the appearance of wood by allowing its natural features to show through and sometimes includes UV-fade resistant pigments and resins.
A wood preservative, on the other hand, is formulated to protect wood against wood-destroying fungi (e.g., wet rot), wood-discolouring fungi, and wood-boring insects. It often penetrates deeply into the wood to provide long-lasting protection.
We offer products for both purposes. Barrettine's Wood Protective Treatment acts as a sealer with water-repellent and UV-resistant properties while our Wood Preserver provides comprehensive protection against fungi, decay, and insects.
