Is it better to oil or stain decking?

Both oil and stain treatments offer benefits for decking depending on your needs:

1. Decking Oils: Typically penetrate deeper into wood, providing nourishment and long-lasting protection. Oils help repel water, prevent cracking and splitting, and often contain UV inhibitors to reduce fading. Products like Barrettine All-in-One Decking Oil also include biocides to protect against mould and mildew, making them easier to maintain as they won't peel or flake.

2. Decking Stains: Tend to provide a coloured finish while still offering some protection. They generally sit on the surface and can add a richer, more consistent colour. However, stains might require more frequent maintenance as they are more prone to peeling compared to oils.

Combining both, if you desire deep nourishment with a splash of colour, you might consider a coloured decking oil, which gives you the benefits of oil with the aesthetic appeal of stain.

Does decking oil stop mould?

Decking oil can help prevent mould growth, but it does not completely stop it. Products like our Decking Oil All-In-One Treatment and Anti-Slip Decking Oil contain surface biocides that help protect the timber against mould and algae. For best results in treating existing mould, using a biocide cleaner such as Knockout Driveway, Decking & Patio Cleaner before applying the decking oil is recommended.
