What does varnish do to wood?
Varnish protects wood by creating a hard, protective finish that guards against moisture, scratches, and UV damage, while enhancing the wood's natural grain and colour. It also prevents cracking and flaking due to environmental factors.
Is varnish a sealer for wood?
Varnish forms a film on the surface of the wood and prevents wood from naturally exchanging moisture with the environment. This can lead to trapped moisture and subsequent wood decay. So, varnish is not typically used as a sealer for wood. Its primary function is to protect wood surfaces by providing a durable coating finish. To effectively seal wood, we would recommend our exterior Wood Protective Treatment and our Hardwax Oil.
